Breaking the peace.

--Robert Thompson, wearing a blue uniform overcoat, was arraigned at the Mayor's Court yesterday on the charge of being drunk and making an assault upon negroes. Mr. R. H. Barnes testified that the accused came to his store on the previous day very drunk, and he prevailed upon him to go out. Some negroes were standing upon the curbstone, and Thompson made an assault upon them, and afterwards threatened to whip Mr. Barnes himself. Called an officer and had him arrested, and he resisted stoutly. The Mayor required security for his good behavior, and also fined him ten dollars, under an ordinance of the city for resisting an officer. He declared that he had no recollection of the occurrence, having been under the influence of liquor at the time, which is quite probable; but the Mayor declined to receive that as an excuse.
