Until Smith could arrive from Missouri and Wilson remount his cavalry, Schofield's force was therefore inferior to Hood's; but when the reinforcements from all quarters were concentrated, the national numbers would exceed those of the enemy.
To effect this concentration was of course of vital importance; to this consideration all others were secondary.
Schofield was accordingly instructed to watch the movements of Hood, and retard his advance as long as possible, without risking a
