A quaint old gentleman, in speaking of the different allotments of men, by which some become useful citizens and others worthless vagrants, by way of illustration remarked:-- ‘ "So one slab of marble becomes a useful doorstep, while another becomes a lying tombstone. "’ Many a true heart that would have come back like a dove to the ark, after its first transgression, has been frightened beyond recall by the savage charity of an unforgiving spirit. A man that hath no virtue in himself ever enviath virtue in others for men's minds will either feed upon their own good or upon others' evil; and who wanteth the one will prey upon the other.
