Another New book.
[from the Nashville Christ an Advocate.]

‘"Dr Vere--A Story of Plebelatis and Patricians, "’ by Rev. H. W. Hilliard, Ll. D. of Alabama, is now in press. Dr. Hilliard has long filled the public eye as an accomplished Christian gentleman. In Congress, in the pulpit, and on the platform, his rank for years has been with the first men of America Perhaps few men ever passed through the atmosphere of political life and came out more perfectly untarnished. He illustrated how compatible Christian excellence is with public service; and in the midst of corrupting influences, has borne himself loftily and above the break of defamation. Now that he is about to give us an illustration of his power with the pen as an author, we have but one fear, and that is that people will expect from the curator too much as a writer; and yet we have reason to believe that his book will be one of rare interest. The characters are drawn from real life, and they represent the most distinguished and interesting personages of the times to which this story refers. One of the excellencies of the forthcoming work is, that it will develop principles honor what is excellent, and do much, we believe, to elevate and encourage a sound sentimentality and a pure Christianity. Dr. Billiard brings to the work such qualifications as a scholar, a traveler, a statesman, and a gentleman of cultivated taste, that we confess our expectations are high.

This work, we will add, is now in the stereotyper's hands, and will be ready in about three weeks--as usual, published by our enterprising neighbors, Messrs. West & Johnston gentlemen who have so far, proven themselves benefactors of the Southern reading public. They have done more in this commendable direction than all the other publishers in the Southern Confederacy.
