In the new game "Fallout 4," you've got a role to play in rebuilding human civilization following the nuclear apocalypse.
But, rather than rebuilding civilization, many of the game's players are instead creating their dream homes. Or even dream towns ! Like so:
Bethesda Game Studios
The latest game in the long-running "Fallout" series puts players in "The Commonwealth," which is essentially the Boston metropolitan area (think: Cambridge, Jamaica Plains, etc. in addition to Boston itself). "Fallout 4's" contribution to the series is a building system, which enables players to create some unbelievable settlements: places where you and other settlers can live, ranging from small homes to...well:
Bethesda Game Studios
Indeed. Here are the best player-created settlements we've found thus far, care of Reddit and Imgur and forums.
One player is building a "small" home on an abandoned barge:
Bethesda Game Studios
It's made up entirely of shipping containers, as one does.
Bethesda Game Studios
At least it's got a nice-ish view!
Over there you'll see irradiated water from the nuclear apocalypse! And over there, um, more of that!
Bethesda Game Studios
Not content to create a living space, one player took things to the limit and created this massive re-creation of a Rubik's Cube:
Bethesda Game Studios
It's powered by over 180 generators.
Creations like this require the PC version of the game plus some modifications to the standard game, which enable players to create things that are too large or detailed for the game on a standard computer.
Bethesda Game Studios
But forget about barge homes and massive Rubik's Cubes — this is the largest settlement we've seen yet, and it's almost certainly the most detailed.
Bethesda Game Studios
It's got a nice lounge area with a panorama view of post-apocalypse Boston!
Bethesda Game Studios
From which you've got incredible views.
Bethesda Game Studios
Its proud creator stands at the gates in some pretty spiffy armor.
This massive settlement also requires modding the PC version of the game. Don't go try building this on your PlayStation 4!
Bethesda Game Studios
Players aren't sticking to just land-based settlements either. Here's an amazing flying house!
This is called the "Prydwen," and it's usually full of one of the game's factions (the Brotherhood of Steel).
Bethesda Game Studios
Better yet, this creator added a special section dedicated to the game's dog: Dogmeat. Here, the house is anchored to the ground by cables.
Bethesda Game Studios
Dogmeat looks pretty happy about his sweet house.

This pooch is part of the jet set.

But most settlements are a bit more modest. This one in Somerville isn't a looker, but it's got tons of amenities.
Bethesda Game Studios
And spots to lounge in.
Bethesda Game Studios
And a watchtower full of automated turrets for defense from evil raiders.
Which you'll need, because, ya know, it's the post-apocalypse and human civilization has collapsed, along with law and order.
Bethesda Game Studios
But it's still pretty dreary at night, unfortunately.
Bethesda Game Studios
Instead of going with a more conventional home, one player built this small town on a strip of still-standing highway.
Bethesda Game Studios
There are commercial districts and homes. And some pretty great places to catch rays.
Bethesda Game Studios
There's even a town hospital, run by one of the game's factions.
Bethesda Game Studios
Without mods, one Xbox One player created this densely packed town.
Bethesda Game Studios
The front entrance is heavily guarded, as it should be.
Bethesda Game Studios
But once inside, there's lots to do. There's this large marketplace, for instance.
Bethesda Game Studios
And a whole mess of different types of merchant.
Bethesda Game Studios
The creator of this settlement made themselves a particularly nice home within the town.
This house is referred to as "Chez Alex."
Bethesda Game Studios
Rather than create a full town, one builder took the Sanctuary settlement and turned it into an adorable treehouse.
Bethesda Game Studios
Here's a closer look.
Bethesda Game Studios
Like any treehouse worth its wood, this one's got a living tree running right through the middle.
Bethesda Game Studios
Better yet, it's got a desk with a view, for writing The Great Post-American Novel.
When there's no real government or rule of law, is it still "The United States of America?"
Bethesda Game Studios
But some folks are more defense-oriented. This castle, replete with moat, should do it.
Bethesda Game Studios
And finally, this one required mods to complete, but it's maybe the most fully built out city of all.
The player behind this says it took over 80 hours to complete. No joke!
Bethesda Game Studios
The city's gates are high and go a long way in turning off would-be invaders.
Bethesda Game Studios
The city's full of dilapidated, yet oddly pretty buildings.
Bethesda Game Studios
It looks especially good around dusk, when everything's lit by the dim bulbs of the post-apocalypse.
